Published Reviewed 5 min read
In plain language
Medicare subsidises up to 8 group exercise physiology sessions per calendar year for eligible people with type 2 diabetes — evidence-based, low-cost, and effective.
- 8 sessions per calendar year, in addition to individual allied-health visits.
- Requires GP referral on the specific Medicare form.
- Combined aerobic and resistance training improves HbA1c and cardiovascular risk.
Why group EP works
Combined aerobic and resistance training reduces HbA1c by around 0.6–0.7% on average in people with type 2 diabetes and improves blood pressure, lipids and body composition. Group delivery adds accountability and peer support without losing individual progression.
How to access it
Ask your GP about the Type 2 Diabetes Group Services items. You'll need an initial individual assessment (item 81100) before the group sessions (item 81115).
